Global Warming Facts: Some Statistics

Global Warming Facts: Some Statistics

Although the topic has been hotly debated over the last several decades, global warming facts show that the earth is indeed warming up. Scientists have noted that the earth exhibits many different signs of climate change. Many statistics exist in the area of climate change, although scientists and others may not always agree on the interpretation of the facts. Listed below are some of the global warming facts and statistics that scientists have found:

 Since 1880, the average temperature has increased by over one degree Fahrenheit. Much of this average increase has happened in recent years, according to NASA.

 Scientists have also discovered the rate of warming is increasing. The last two decades had the warmest years of the last 400. The United Nation?s panel on global warming reported that 11 of the last 12 years were the warmest since the 1850s.

 The average temperature in the Arctic, including Alaska, Russia, and Canada, rose has increased more than double the average increase elsewhere. This has led to dramatic melting in the Polar Regions. Arctic ice is disappearing fast and polar bears and other arctic creatures are facing starvation and other ill effects from the melting ice and warmer temperatures.

 Glaciers around the world are also disappearing at increasingly faster rates. Glacier Park in Montana has only 27 glaciers left from 150 in 1910. Scientists estimate that the glacier atop Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa will be gone within the next several decades.

 Coral reefs, which are extremely sensitive to temperature changes in the water, have suffered massive die offs in the last decade. Scientists believe that this will continue to happen more often and in greater intensity.

 Scientists believe that the increasing frequency and intensity of weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and heat waves can also be linked to global warming.

These are just a few of the signs that global warming is occurring. In 2007, the United Nation?s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a report stating that humans have caused most, if not all, of the current changes. They based their findings on the work of over 2500 scientists.

Factors like industrialization, pollution, and deforestation have led to increased concentrations of greenhouse gases near earth?s surface. We are putting more gases like carbon dioxide into the air than the current level of plants and trees can handle. Cutting down forests, rainforests, and other natural areas has decreased the number of plants available to absorb these gases.

Gases that are not absorbed linger in the atmosphere. This means that even if the greenhouse gases emitted today were able to be absorbed, climate change would continue because of the already excess amounts in the atmosphere.

Climate change could signal massive and extreme changes for human and animal life. Sea levels are expected to continue to rise putting many coastal areas under water. Over a million species could face extinction because of habitat destruction and changing ecosystems. Additionally, the ocean?s currents could change which could produce a mini-ice age.

Knowing global warming facts can help convince many people that we need to change our habits and behaviors. Even small changes like using less electricity and carpooling can have large effects for the earth. The debate over global warming will continue but the facts seem to indicate that humans are the ones that need to do something about the problem.
