Registration Now Open for "Beyond AP Statistics" Workshop for Experienced AP Statistics Teachers in Washington DC

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) May 13, 2009 -- The American Statistical Association (ASA) -- National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Joint Committee on the Curriculum in Statistics and Probability is sponsoring "Beyond AP Statistics," a workshop for experienced Advanced Placement (AP) statistics teachers. Registration is now open for the August 3rd session, which is being held in conjunction with the 2009 Joint Statistical Meetings in Washington DC.

High school students can earn college credit for the AP Statistics course if they pass the exam. Most AP statistics teachers are high school math teachers who have been asked to teach a college level statistics course and who may not have formal statistics training. This workshop offers enrichment material beyond the basic AP statistics syllabus so that the math teachers will gain a greater understanding of statistics and statistical applications.

"We're pleased the ASA/NCTM Joint Committee is offering this course again this year," said Martha Aliaga, ASA Director of Education. "One of ASA's primary missions is the improvement of statistical education at all levels. Toward that end, this program supports mathematics teachers who are teaching AP Statistics so they can better fulfill their commitment to their students."

The BAPS workshop will take place on Monday, August 3, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, at the Center City Public Charter School - Shaw Campus, 711 N Street NW, Washington, DC, across from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

Teachers can obtain program information or register to attend the conference online at http://www.amstat.org/education/baps. Registration for BAPS will continue through July 15 or until the course is filled.

The Washington Statistical Society, the largest ASA chapter, has offered to reimburse the $50 registration fee for the first 10 DC metro-area teachers who register and attend BAPS. Teachers eligible for reimbursement are AP statistics teachers in the Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area, including the District of Columbia and neighboring parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.
